Genre Research: Mystery

Suspense and mystery are evoked in mystery films by using low lighting and dark tones. This could even be done on purpose inside the story to hide specific information from the protagonist. Murder mysteries often take place in cities. This is done to put the audience  ease because they are in a familiar setting and may feel as though they could be in the same situation. Mysterious characters are often dressed in commonplace clothing. The idea is to make it appear as authentic as possible.

Common editing: Shot/Reverse shot to present two sides of a discussion; flashbacks to solve a mystery; and the use of black and white filters in a flashback.

Common Sounds used: In mystery and thriller films, non-diegetic music is often included to heighten the sense of suspense and tension. Usually, the song starts out slowly before gaining intensity and speed. Using silence is another way to create anxiety and worry in a gathering. It can also be employed to highlight a character's sense of loneliness. Another method for creating tension and suspense is diegetic sound. Footsteps are employed to hint at a crucial scene or occasion. Additionally, this can imply that a character is alone or that they are being observed.

Example films of your genres: Missing, Murder Mystery, and Enola Holmes

Finding the answer to a mystery and solving challenges present an intellectual challenge that I like. The unexpected turns of plot are things that I also enjoy. However, I find it irritating that a few of them have obvious endings. In addition, some have complex, confusing storylines.
